Daniel High School Announcements
Softball Team Drops Decisive Game

The D.W.D. softball team lost the third and deciding game of the state championship series on Saturday evening.  Hartsville took a 4-2 win over the Lions to capture the state championship.  The 2012 team had the best season in the program's history.  The girls won  the region with a perfect 10-0 record and then captured the District and Upperstate titles without a loss.  We are proud of all of you.

Congratulations to everyone on the team, including Coach Floyd and assistants Coach Touchberry and Coach Qualkinbush for the excellent season.  A special congratulations goes out to Alex Oliver, the team's lone senior.  Alex has starred at catcher for several seasons.  Best wishes to her in the future.

Awards Day Information Now Posted

Information concerning events and times of the Awards Day and Awards Day Practice have now been posted to the website.  Seniors, and others that are participating in the program, need to pay close attention to their responsibilities and to the times and locations of the various events.

Seniors are reminded that the Awards Day Practice is on Wednesday, May 23rd.  The Awards Day ceremony will be on Thursday, May 24th.  This ceremony will be preceded by the annual Senior Breakfast at 7:00 AM and Senior Photo at 8:00 AM.  The photo will be taken in the stadium with seniors in cap and gown.  Thank you for helping the 2012 DWD Graduation activities run smoothly.

End-of-Course Testing Now Underway

The South Carolina End-of-Course  Examination Program will began this week.  All students enrolled in courses with an EOC test must take the exam.  These test count as 20% of a student's grade in these courses, as required by state law.  Failure to take the exam will result in a grade of zero.  Please make every effort to attend school on the day of your exam.

Below are the dates of the tests in the specified courses.  Contact the individual teacher involved if you have any questions:

Algebra 1 & Math Tech 2 – May 15 & May 16
Biology 1 – May 17
English 1 – May 18
US History – May 21 & May 22

EOC exams CANNOT be given early.  If a student is absent during a test day, he/she will have to complete the exam during a makeup session. Makeups will be held May 23-May31.  Students must have completed all required tests in order to participate in Awards Day.

Graduation Information Now Posted to Web

A page of
graduation information has now been added to the school website.  All seniors and their parents are asked to double-check the dates and times for all required events.  Make special note of the times of Awards Day Practice and Graduation Practice.  It is very important to attend these practices so that everyone will know their responsibilities during the actual events.  A dress code for Awards Day and Graduation is also posted.

Note also that the Senior Class Picture will be taken in the morning of May 24th, just before the Awards Day Ceremony.  This is the annual cap and gown photo that is printed and framed.  We would like all seniors to be in attendance for this photograph.  Let's all help to make the 2012 graduation year run smoothly.

US News Ranks Daniel's Academic Program as Third in State

The U.S. News and World Report magazine announced its annual rankings of the nation's high schools on Tuesday.  D.W. Daniel was ranked third in South Carolina behind only the Academic Magnet School of North Charleston and the Charleston County School of the Arts.  As both of these schools accept only a selected group of students, we are thus the highest-rated "normal" public high school in the state.  A total of 224 high schools in South Carolina were ranked in this assessment.

These ranking are based on a variety of academic factors and test scores.  These include Exit Exam scores, participation and passing rates in Advanced Placement courses and exams, and a proprietary "College Readiness Index" calculated by the US News.  Among the highlights of our school's academic program noted by the publication are the facts that 44% of our students scored on an advanced level in both mathematics and language arts on the Exit Exam, 43% of our graduating seniors have participated in our AP program, and our students had an 86% passing rate on the most recent round of AP testing.
More information on the rankings...

Overall, Daniel received a Silver Medal award from the publication, placing among the top 700 schools in the nation.  Achievement of this rating would not be possible without the combined efforts of the entire Daniel family.  We would like to thank all of the students, parents, faculty, administration, and support staff who made this possible.  Thank you all for being a part of D.W. Daniel High School.

Second Semester Exam Schedule Released

The exam schedule for the end of the year has now been released.  These exams begin on May 29 for seniors and June 7 for underclassmen.  The entire exam schedule is posted online.  Please note that Daniel underclassmen will begin their exams two days prior to those at Liberty and Pickens.  This is due to deadlines imposed by the ongoing construction projects.

Seniors are also reminded that Monday, June 4, is the deadline to complete all APEX initial credit, credit recovery, and remediation work.  June 8 is the APEX deadline for underclassmen.  Please make sure that all work is completed on time.  In addition, anyone wishing to take exams at an alternate times must receive permission from the administration.  Parents should contact our principal, Sharon Huff, with these requests.
